Raj Kapur, Managing Director, Dow Corning India
Raj Kapur joined Dow Corning in 1974 in Midland, MI in Process Engineering – Rubber and Sealants. He has since held positions in engineering, economic evaluation and control, marketing and industry and product line management in the U.S. and Asia, and has also been responsible for managing Dow Corning interests in other business partnerships that Dow Corning has had.

Mr. Kapur was named Dow Corning’s Regional Manager (India & South Asia) in 1998. Upon the formation of Dow Corning India in 2000, he was appointed Managing Director, and was made the Chairman in 2007.

Under his leadership, Dow Corning has succeeded in becoming one of the fastest growing specialty chemical companies in India, as well as a leader in the Indian silicone domain. 

In addition, Dow Corning recently won the Frost & Sullivan Indian Manufacturing Excellence Award in the gold category, in recognition of the company’s strong commitment to quality, safety and the environment. Mr. Kapur is also leading the effort to establish several capabilities in India that provide services to Dow Corning globally.

Mr. Kapur holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India; a Master’s degree in Polymer Engineering from Case Western University in Cleveland, OH; and a Master’s degree in Administration from Central Michigan University. He is also Chairman of Multibase India, a Dow Corning group company, a founding member of the board of trustees of the Society of Chemical Industry, as well as Vice Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Western India.


Future of the Pharma & Fine Chemicals in India

Rajesh Shivastva, CEO, Fine Chemicals and Custom Research and Manufacturing Services Jubilant Organosys Ltd. 

Rajesh Srivastava has a bachelor degree in Chemical Technology from HBTI Kanpur in 1987. He has also completed his Masters degree in Marketing Management from Jamunalal Bajaj Institute, Mumbai .

Mr. Srivastava has more than 20 years of experience in the chemical and fine chemical industry. Before taking over the assignment in Jubilant Organosys, he has worked with Ranbaxy Fine Chemicals, Indofil Chemicals (a division of Modipon Chemicals ) and Shalimar Paints Limited.

Under the stewardship of Mr. Srivastava, Jubilant’s Fine Chemicals and Custom Research and Manufacturing Services (CRAMS) has grown multifold since its inception. His business today offers complete integrated solutions to its pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals customers in contract research on FTE and molecule basis, custom synthesis of compound during clinical trials, contract manufacturing on an exclusive and confidential basis, along with the basket of 170 compounds that have been developed through in-house R&D.


How to Establish a Chemical Cluster

Dr. Stan Higgins, Chief Executive Officer
North East of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC)

Stan Higgins has 35 years of experience in the Process Industries. He began his career in the Nuclear Industry before studying Chemistry, Economics and Technology at York University. As an undergraduate, Mr. Higgins had some new ideas in the field of mechanistic organic chemistry that resulted in the University awarding him a PhD in record time.

After a period in medicinal chemistry, process development and technical support and manufacturing in pharmaceuticals with Reckitts and Coleman and then Glaxo, Mr. Higgins gained multi-plant management experience in specialty commodity chemicals with Akzo. He went on to become Technical then Managing Director of Fine Chemical Company Peboc, which won several industrial awards including two Queens Awards to Industry. Mr. Higgins led the divestment of the company from Solvay, which resulted in a move to Tennessee, U.S. as Eastman’s Fine Chemicals’ Manufacturing Director.

On returning to the U.K., Mr. Higgins was appointed Technical Director of Laporte Fine Chemicals and following the sale of Laporte to Degussa, worked for James Robinson Limited, part of the Yule Catto Group, helping to establish new manufacturing facilities in India and over seeing technical matters in their U.K. and German facilities. Most recently he set up the Pharmaceutical & Speciality Cluster in the North East of England and following a merger with the Teesside Chemical Initiative, Mr. Higgins established the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC). NEPIC represents a quarter of the whole economy of the North East of England and the Cluster is set to grow from £9 to £14 billion of GDP over the next 10 years.

Mr. Higgins also supports the five Universities in the North East of England and other initiatives. He has chaired one of the UK’s Largest E Business Project - Gold at Newcastle University and is also on the Molecular Engineering Board at Newcastle. He is a member of the Industrial Advisory Board to the Science Faculty at Teesside University. He sits on the Planning and Economic Strategy Board part of the Teesside City Region Project and the Board of Redcar & Cleveland Local Enterprise Growth Initiative. He is also a member of the Cogent Sector Skills Advisory Council and President of the NE Association for Science education. He has held several executive and non exec board positions in private companies.

Venugopal Koka, President & CEO, SABIC Innovative Plastics, India

Venugopal Koka is the president and CyEO of SABIC Innovative Plastics, India. SABIC Innovative Plastics, a business unit of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), founded in September 2007 with the acquisition of GE Plastics, is headquartered in Pittsfield, MA.

Prior to his current position within SABIC Innovative Plastics, Mr. Koka served as the President and CEO of the former GE Plastics, India from September 2003. In 2000, Mr. Koka became president and CEO of GE Lighting and was instrumental in restructuring the business for profitable growth. Prior to this, he was the manufacturing leader and then the managing director of GE’s Silicones business.

Prior to joining General Electric in 1996, Mr. Koka was with Raychem where he held several positions in manufacturing, marketing, sales, and project management. Mr. Koka joined Rallis India as a management trainee in 1980.

Mr. Koka did his B.Tech in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in 1978 and his postgraduate in industrial engineering from the National Institute for Industrial Engineering, Bombay in 1980.

Just Jansz, President/Technology Business, LyondellBasell

As President/Technology Business of LyondellBasell, Just Jansz is based in Frankfurt and has responsibility for overseeing process technology licensing, new ventures, technology services and polymers project engineering, and catalyst manufacturing, sales and marketing.

In 1995, Mr. Jansz joined Montell, a Basell predecessor company, as marketing manager, Automotive Europe. He subsequently served as commercial director for the Benelux and Nordic countries and as, director Automotive Business Europe. Mr. Jansz was appointed senior vice-president, Advanced Polyolefins, when Basell was formed in 2000 and President of the Basell Technology business in 2004.

Mr. Jansz started his career working for Shell in 1981 and consequently held positions in R&D, engineering, and sales and marketing in the Netherlands and Switzerland.

Born in The Netherlands, Mr. Jansz obtained studied Mineral Engineering and earned a PhD in chemical metallurgy at Delft University of Technology.

Inda's Role in the Global Chemical Economy


Kamal Nanavaty, President of Reliance Industries Limited for Cracker & Polymers Sector.

Mr Nanavaty holds a Chemical Engineering Degree from University of Utah, USA.  After graduation, he worked with USI Chemical Company. Upon returning to India, Mr. Nanavaty worked with Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited.


In 1989, Mr. Nanavaty joined Reliance Industries Limited. He was involved with the formation of Cracker & Polymers business at Reliance.

Mr. Nanavaty joined the Board of Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited in June 2002 remained a director till its amalgamation with Reliance Industries Limited in September 2007.

Reliance Industries Limited is India’s largest private sector enterprise with turnover of USD 25.5 billion and an asset base of USD 26.4 billion.

Mr. Nanavaty is a leading speaker at various national & international forums. 

He is a member of ACC (American Chemistry Council), SPE (Indian Section), IPI (Indian Chapter) and The Founders Club of Petrochemical Industry, USA. He was elected honorary fellow of India Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2001.


Beyond Traditional Business Diversification and Globalization

ARUP BASU, Chief Operating Officer, Tata Chemicals

Arup Basu is the Chief Operating Officer of the Indian Industrial Chemicals Business.  Prior to this, Mr. Basu served as Head of the Haldia Complex in West Bengal, where Tata Chemicals manufactures its phosphate-based chemicals and fertilizers.

Mr. Basu joined Tata Chemicals from Accenture, where he was responsible for business development and managing large-scale projects for clients in the industrial space.  Prior to Accenture, he worked in a variety of roles at Indian Aluminium Company and at Tata Motors.

Mr. Basu holds a PhD in Composite Materials from UMIST, Manchester and a B.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from Imperial College, London.  He is a member of the Maharashtra Economic Development Council, Indian Chemical Council and the Alkali Manufacturers’ Association of India.

Ujjal De, Senior Vice President, Haldia Petro


Ujjal De is Senior Vice President, responsible for Polymer Marketing, Business Development and Application Research and Development in Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd 
(HPL).
 
Mr. De brings has 30 years of experience in petrochemical marketing, which includes 15 years with the country's first petrochemical company National Organic Chemical Industries Ltd, Mumbai and 4 years with Reliance Industries Ltd Mumbai.
 
Mr. De joined HPL in 2001 and has been heading Polymer Marketing for the last seven years. He introduced several innovative initiatives in the field of polymer marketing which eventually became the benchmark of the industry, like port based Pricing, Forward(future) Sales etc.

Mr. De has been credited with popularizing the concept of ‘Value added export’ of plastic processed goods by the plastic processing industry. He has been acknowledged to have played a mentoring role for last fifteen years which resulted in substantial growth of exports of PP Woven bags, Jumbo bags and T shirt bags from India.

Mr. De is an Executive Committee Member of CII, Eastern Region. He holds  B. Tech degree in Chemical Engineering from Institute of Technology Benares Hindu University.
